Steve Norris was MP for Oxford East and then Epping Forest from 1983 until he retired from the House of Commons in 1997. He was Transport Minister from 1992 to 1996, having previously been Parliamentary Private Secretary to Trade & Industry Secretary Nicholas Ridley, Home Secretary Kenneth Baker and Environment Minister William Waldegrave.
On leaving Parliament he became Director General of the Road Haulage Association, a post he resigned in 2000, when he was chosen as the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London. In February 2003 he was again selected to contest the post in the Mayoral election.
A businessman, writer and broadcaster, Mr Norris is a director of a number of quoted and private companies including Jarvis plc, First Group's London Bus operations, the Internet Corporation and ITIS Holdings plc. He advises a number of blue chip companies on public affairs issues, and is Chairman of the National Cycling Strategy Board and President of the Motor Cycle Industry Association.
